Last week, the 49ers STEAM Education Program hosted more than 100 young female students from Techbridge Girls for a unique field trip experience that showcased how STEAM and sports are inextricably bound.

Techbridge Girls, which focuses on exposing underrepresented girls to STEM and provides valuable mentorship opportunities, brought young ladies ranging from fourth to seventh grade from its San Jose and Oakland afterschool program for a fun-filled day at Levi’s® Stadium.Students learned how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) is used in football and worked side by side in a football helmet facemask design challenge with 49ers employees.  In addition, students had the unique opportunity to learn about different positions within the 49ers organization and gain insight to careers off the playing field.

Donning a “Phenomenal Woman” shirt, 49ers General Counsel Hannah Gordon spoke to the young ladies of Techbridge Girls and recounted the time when poet Maya Angelou visited her eighth grade class in Oakland.

“I was inspired by Maya Angelou when I was your age, and you girls inspire me now,” said Gordon. “You don’t have to decide on your career now, but you can grow up to be whatever you put your mind to.  I hope this discussion gives you a few ideas on the possibilities.”

Each of the dozen female 49ers employees rotated to different tables, to ensure the young ladies of Techbridge learned about various careers for women within the sports organization.
