CFP Week 9 Recap

It was a marquee weekend for both the Pac-12 and Big Ten. A Top-15 matchup cemented one team’s hunt for the College Football Playoff and three other contests tightened up the conference races.

QB Sam Darnold threw for 231 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Trojans (5-3, 4-2) to the victory over Cal (4-4, 2-3).

Michigan (8-0, 5-0) LB Jabrill Peppers notched seven total tackles (four solo), one sack, two tackles for loss, and one rushing touchdown to lead the Wolverines to their first victory over Michigan State (2-6, 0-5) since 2012.

Penn State (6-2, 4-1) RB Saquon Barkley had a career day, rushing for 207 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Nittany Lions to victory over Purdue (3-5, 1-4).

Minnesota (6-2, 3-2) RB Rodney Smith rushed for 100 yards and two scores to carry the Gophers past Illinois (2-6, 1-4). The Illini trailed by one score after three periods, but were outscored by 16 points in the final quarter.

WR Mitchell Paige’s 15-yard touchdown at the end of the third quarter put Indiana (4-4, 2-3) in the lead for good as Maryland’s (5-3, 2-3) comeback attempt fell short.

Ohio State (7-1, 4-1) RB Mike Weber’s two touchdowns helped the Buckeyes edge the upset-minded Northwestern (4-4, 3-2) Wildcats.

Wisconsin (6-2, 3-2) SS D’Cota Dixon broke up Tommy Armstrong’s fourth down pass in overtime to seal the Badgers’ upset victory over Nebraska (7-1, 4-1).

Washington (8-0, 5-0) WR Dante Pettis’s punt return touchdown with 3:25 left in regulation was the difference as the Huskies edged Utah (7-2, 4-2).

Oregon (3-5, 1-4) QB Justin Herbert tied the Oregon single-game passing record with 489 yards along with four touchdowns as the Ducks beat Arizona State (5-4, 2-4) to end a five-game losing streak.

Washington State (6-2, 5-0) QB Luke Falk threw for 415 yards and five touchdowns as the Cougars came back from 24-6 halftime deficit to beat Oregon State (2-6, 1-4).

Stanford (5-3, 3-3) RB Christian McCaffrey scored three times as the Cardinal earned a much needed victory over slumping Arizona (2-6, 0-5).

  • Defensive Player of the Week: Washington LB Azeem Victor 16 tackles (10 solo), one tackle for loss
  • Special Teams Player of the Week: Washington WR/PR Dante Pettis game winning 58-yard punt return touchdown.
